Free The Vote 2020 Report

Building on decades of voting rights work begun in 2003 as All of Us or None, formerly incarcerated & convicted people campaigned over the past three years to restore voting rights to 50,000 Californians on felony parole, culminating in the passage of Prop 17.

From the first All of Us or None meetings in Oakland in 2003, to the passage of Amendment 4 in Florida restoring voting rights to 1.4 million people with felony convictions, we have struggled with few resources and against the assumption that people directly impacted by the criminal legal system could organize and lead meaningful campaigns. As our new report clearly documents: not only do we need a seat at the table, we need to set the agenda and center our voices in the work. Nothing about us without us.

California’s Mother-Infant Prison Programs: An Investigation

California has six small mother-infant prison facilities, all run by outside contractors with an on-site representative of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). They house only 1% of the 10,000 women in state prison facilities. This report looks at a number of program features, such as childcare/childrearing issues, food, medical care, relationship to the outside world and re-entry.

No More Shackles: A report on the written policies of California’s counties under the new law that limits the use of restraints on pregnant prisoners (2014)

In March 2013, LSPC embarked on a project to determine whether all 58 California counties had written new policies on the shackling of pregnant prisoners to comply with the 2012 legislation. This report explains the new statute, describes our efforts to obtain documentation from the counties, outlines our findings, and makes recommendations for additional legislation, regulation, and research. Our findings address each county’s policy as it is written; we are not able to report on the counties’ practices.

No More Shackles II: A follow- up report on California counties’ written policies under the 2012 law limiting restraing of pregnant prisoners (2017)

This report details LSPC’s recent effort to update our investigation into the implementation of California’s anti-shackling law. We focus specifically on the 36 counties determined to be non-compliant in 2014. In the following pages we explain the relevant legal authority, describe our research methodology, and outline the findings of our 8-month investigation.
